WAKELING FAMILY HISTORY

FAMILY OF THOMAS WAKELING  -  PATERNAL GRANDFATHER OF ADELAIDE MAY  

THOMAS WAKELING

Born c 1852

Married in 1874 to Rosina Townley (born c1848) “The Steamship” 24 Naval Row, Poplar.  

Landlord of “Prince of Wales” pub 342 Caledonian Road, N1 from 1899-1944.  He took over the pub in 1901 at the age of 48.

The “Prince of Wales” has been a bar called “Meltdown” since 2012.

A medal/plaque from “The Union of Comical Fellows” was “Presented to Thomas Wakeling as a Tribute for Kindness Rendered” 29 APL Lodge 1903 No.15

His father, Thomas Elijah c1824-1875 married Mary Green.

His sister, Martha Wakeling b1828 lived at 2 Prospect Place, Prittlewell.

 

Thomas and Rosina had 9 children:

Born 1867.  Office boy in Port at age 14.

ELIZABETH

Born 1878.  Barmaid at age 23.

ALBERT EDWARD                

1880 – 03.09.1953

Father of Adelaide May

Barman at age 21. 

Married Ada Maud Berkshire 1903. 

Landlord of “Prince of Wales” from 1921-1934 and 1938-1944.  

Thomas and Albert celebrated 40 years as landlords with long-term customers at the “Prince of Wales”.  

Landlord “Earl of Warwick” 9 Beatty Road, Stoke Newington from 1938-1944.  He took a 4-year break between pubs - could it have been something to do with the war?  The Landlord from 1934-1938 was Abram Venitt.  

Albert was an amateur boxer and Sunday School teacher.
